The Agios Pavlos church

On the beach - 4 km east of Agia Roumeli (the mouth of the Samaria Gorge) - lies one of the oldest church in Crete, the Agios Pavlos church, which was built by the Cretan saint Ioannis Xenos, who worked at the end of the 10th century and the beginning of the 11th.

The church was built in memory of St. Paul the Apostle's stay in the area.

The church is cruciform with a dome and still has remains of frescoes from the 13th century. They are, however, rather damaged owing to the exposed position of the church along the sea.
